Keep Up With Your Physical AND Financial Health!
It sounds crazy, but it’s real - the number of Americans who live to be 100 is expected to quadruple over the next 30 years. Wow! 🤯
Living longer is becoming the new normal. But what’s our plan to live well during those extra years?

The Gift - and the Challenge - of Time
This Forbes article reminds us that living longer is a gift and a challenge. On the one hand, it’s a blessing — more time to see our children grow, travel to places we’ve dreamed of, and enjoy life. On the other hand, it’s a challenge: rising healthcare costs, the need for reliable income over more time, and making sure we don’t outlive our savings.
The average 65-year-old can expect to spend over $160,000 on healthcare alone during retirement. And that doesn’t include long-term care, which can cost another $100,000 per year in a nursing home. Living longer means those numbers can stretch even higher.
September is Healthy Aging Month, and it’s a reminder to take care of our physical health - and our financial health.
A Tale of Two Retirements
Let’s talk about Ruby and Marian.
Ruby retired at 65 with some savings and her Social Security check. Most of the women in her family died in their 80s, so she assumed she’d only need about 20 years of retirement money. Instead, she lived into her late 90s. By the time she was 86, most of her savings were gone, and her children had to cover her care. It was so stressful for her and her family.
Now, here’s Marian. Like Ruby, most of the women in Marian’s family died in their 80s, but Marian knew that wasn’t certain. So she worked with an insurance broker and financial advisor early. She built a retirement plan with longevity in mind. After all, even if she didn’t end up needing it, her children could use what was left over. She also lived into her 90s. Because she had a long-term care policy and guaranteed income, she was able to spend her later years focusing on her family and enjoyment instead of finances.
Both lived long lives — but one lived them with freedom, the other with constant worry. That’s the power of preparation.
What’s Your Vision?
Think about how you want your future to look. Maybe taking a cruise with friends in your 80s? Maybe learning a new skill in your 90s? Celebrating graduations and birthdays with your family without worrying about money?
It’s all possible. But you have to plan and have intention.
- A strong body keeps you active.
- A strong mind keeps you sharp.
- A strong financial plan keeps you free.
These three together create healthy aging that turns extra years into better years.
Start Preparing for Tomorrow
So let’s make some intentional choices:
- Prioritize your health. Small daily habits like walking, balanced eating, and rest are investments your future self will thank you for.
- Review your insurance. Make sure your health insurance, life insurance, and long-term care options are strong enough to support your future needs.
- Plan your money for longevity. Work with a trusted advisor to stretch retirement savings wisely and protect yourself from outliving your income.
- Protect your loved ones. A good plan ensures your family won’t carry unnecessary financial burdens later.
Living Longer, Living Better
Healthy Aging Month is about living with energy, confidence, and purpose no matter your age. It’s about building a life where your 70s, 80s, 90s, and yes, even 100s, can be full of joy and freedom.
Aging well doesn’t happen by chance. It happens by choice.
